When the City of Midland, TX was ready to build new homes for the Oakland A's Double A baseball affiliate - Midland Rockhounds - and the Lee Rebels and Midland High Bulldogs high school football teams, it put considerable thought and effort into the planning of every aspect of the Scharbauer Sports Complex.

The complex actually is home to two stadiums: CitiBank Ball Park and Grande Communications Football/Soccer Stadium. CitiBank Ball Park features 5,000 permanent and 1,000 grass berm seats, a picnic area for 600, club lounge, VIP suites and a novelty store in the baseball stadium. Grande Communications Stadium features 15,000 permanent seats, with an additional 3,000 grass berm seats and a synthetic turf playing surface. The complex has parking for 3,500 vehicles and 40 buses.

When it came time to design a paint scheme for the complex, architects wanted something unique that would remain vibrant, even in the legendary Texas sun. Ultimately the architects turned their attention to Tnemec’s Series 1077 Enduralume, a metallic pigmented aliphatic polyurethane that is infused with specialty additives that absorb and diffuse ultra-violet light, protecting the film from the damaging rays. Often used to accent architecturally interesting details on high-profile projects, Enduralume was specified to coat the decorative louvers over the windows, the columns and beams that hold up the canopy and all the structural steel on the stadium.

First primed with Tnemec’s stalwart Series 66 Hi-Build Epoxoline polyamide epoxy, the steel then received a spray-applied coat of Series 1077 Enduralume in 01MT Bright Aluminum. "We wanted something unique in appearance for the new facility, and we wanted something that would stand the test of time in the ever-changing weather of West Texas," said Jay Edwards, P.E., at Parkhill, Smith & Cooper, Inc. “We chose Tnemec because of their proven track record in long-term performance and unique products as well as their long history of service.”
