When Carlson West Povondra Architects set out to design a new Daimler Chrysler Five Star dealership in Omaha, Nebraska, they knew that the coatings selection was an important part of the process. After all, this sales and service facility was going to house a 25,000-square-foot service area, one of the largest in Nebraska.

“The architect for this project had a lot of experience with developing dealerships,” recalled Tnemec coating consultant Ken Efferding. “They witnessed how Tnemec coating systems performed in the past and trusted the brand.”

The service area flooring required a coating system that could withstand the back-and-forth tire traffic and resist vehicular fluid staining. Series 280 Tneme-Glaze, a 100 percent solids epoxy, was roller-applied along with a topcoat of Series 291 CRU, an aliphatic polyester polyurethane.

Design plans also called for the use of a quartz-reinforced epoxy coating system for the 5,000-square-foot service area drop-off. Following a coat of Series 280, Series 222 Deco-Tread, the decorative quartz system, was double broadcast at 1/8” thickness. To complete the system, a coat of Series 284 Deco-Clear was applied along with a topcoat of Series 295 CRU. “The decorative quartz really added to the service area drop-off,” said Efferding. “Baxter Dodge was extremely pleased with the added aesthetics and high quality of the Deco-Tread.”

The interior overhead was airless spray-applied with Series 15 Uni-Bond, a one-coat, rust-inhibitive primer/finish, at 2.0 to 3.5 mils DFT. It was important that the interior walls in the service area were all epoxy and urethane coatings to ensure adhesion, color stability and abrasion & stain resistance. The coating system included two coats of Series 84 Ceramlon ENV, a ceramic-like modified aliphatic amine epoxy coating, along with Series 290 CRU, an easy cleaning and protective topcoat, applied at 2.0 to 3.0 mils DFT.

The exterior of the facility required minimal coating work. The metals were primed with Series 135 Chembuild, a polyamidoamine epoxy, and Series 1077 Enduralume, a metallic pigmented aliphatic polyurethane, was spray-applied at 2.0 to 3.0 mils DFT to the exterior canopies.
