Village of Hobart Elevated Water Tank

Aesthetics was a key consideration when the Village of Hobart, Wisconsin, specified a fluoropolymer coating system from Tnemec to renovate a 300,000-gallon elevated water tank located just a chip shot away from the Thornberry Creek Golf Course clubhouse. “It’s one of the nicer golf courses in the metropolitan Green Bay area,” Tnemec coating consultant John Laird observed. “The village wanted to make sure the tank retained its color and gloss, which is why Tnemec’s fluoropolymer finish coat was specified for the exterior. And they wanted to protect the tank against rusting and corrosion issues, which is why a zinc-rich primer was specified.”

Constructed in 1998, the tank’s interior and exterior steel was prepared for recoating under full containment due to its proximity to the golf course clubhouse and nearby residential properties. The interior wet portion of the water tank was prepared in accordance with SSPC-SP10/NACE No. 2 Near-White Metal Blast Cleaning, while the interior dry surface and exterior steel was prepared in accordance with SSPC-SP6/NACE No. 3 Commercial Blast Cleaning. Following surface preparation, both the interior and exterior steel received a spray-applied coat of Series 91-H2O Hydro-Zinc, a zinc-rich aromatic urethane primer, which provides outstanding long-term corrosion resistance. Nearly 100 gallons of primer were required for the project.

The interior wet portion of the tank’s interior received two spray-applied coats of Series 20 Pota-Pox, a polyamide epoxy, which is certified by NSF International in accordance with ANSI/NSF Standard 61 for use on the interior of potable water storage tanks. The interior dry part of the tank received one coat of Series 20. A total of 120 gallons of Series 20 was required for the interior surfaces.

On the exterior steel, 35 gallons of Series 73 Endura-Shield, an aliphatic acrylic polyurethane, was applied as an intermediate coat. Another 32 gallons of Series 700 HydroFlon, an advanced thermoset fluoropolymer polyurethane finish coat, completed the project. HydroFlon was specified for its outstanding resistance to ultraviolet (UV) light degradation and unprecedented long-term gloss and color retention. A selection of colors including Forest Green, Black, Gray and White were used to recreate the Village logo on the tank. “It’s a beautiful piece of artwork that was selected as a runner-up in Tnemec’s Tank of the Year award in 2009 and featured in the calendar,” Laird acknowledged.

“Everyone is extremely pleased with how it turned out,” Laird added. “They’re thrilled to have a top-of-the-line paint system on the tank and know that the coating is going to look beautiful for many, many years.”
