Lac du Flambeau, Wisconsin

The Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa tribal seal found on this water tank centers on a circular shield rich with Ojibwe symbolism. Designed in the late 1970s by an artist and Tribal members, the image features a stylized Native American profile with a feathered headdress set against a pine-covered landscape, sun, and blue sky. An eagle’s head symbolizes strength and freedom, while a peace pipe reflects diplomacy and spiritual tradition. Six beaded feathers hang below, representing honor and connection to nature. On each side, flaming birch bark torches reference the meaning of “Lac du Flambeau” (“Lake of the Torches”) and the Tribe’s tradition of torchlit spearfishing. The balanced, circular design embodies heritage, peace, and harmony with the environment, and will remain vibrant with a finish coat of HydroFlon.
